This sassy miss came home
with me from a recent estate sale.
It was love at first sight for me.
She is a Staffordshire
begging spaniel jug or pitcher.
I'm not certain about her pedigree,
though I feel certain she is definitely vintage.
Perhaps a vintage reproduction.
What matters most is she is black and white
and the perfect companion to this gentlemen
who I've had for several years.
He too is a black and white begging spaniel
jug or pitcher with a tricorn hat.
Don't they
make the perfect pair?
I think perhaps Mister is of newer vintage,
but that's OK, he fits right in with
all of the Courtly Checks around the house.
He was a thrifty find at Goodwill some years ago.
They could easily be
parents to these two sweet pups.
Yes, I feel as if
a family has been reunited!
They are currently part of a vignette
on the dining room buffet.
I gathered a group of
Courtly Check pieces and filled
them with summer hydrangeas.
Along with a piece of
figurative art by a favorite NY artist.
Tell me! Do you have a fondness for
these Staffordshire dogs?
Are you a fan of black and white?
Sarah
The summer we married, my husband was in graduate school, and I was employed as a teacher. We took a portion of our savings that summer and purchased a sailboat. We christened our Catalina 22, “Hyacinths For The Soul” after Saadi’s poem. Our "Hyacinths" provided years of pleasure.

ReplyDeleteBe a sweetie,
Shelia )
Love them, they were made for each other, can't believe they finally found each other...
ReplyDeleteThese pups really look like they were separated at birth! I would think they had the same "markings" on the bottom! Good for you. You have a perfect pair. And your buffet is just beautiful...you have such a great stye!
ReplyDeleteJane xx
What a treasure you found, Sarah! The perfect little pair now. Love how you've gathered all your black & white...you do have a talent for arranging things beautifully.
ReplyDeleteI read where the Staffordshire spaniel was the "quintessential Victorian bourgeois status-symbol ornament: no mantelpiece was complete without a pair of spaniels standing guard".
Did you know very young children were paid 2 shillings a week to paint the little gold chains?
See, every time I come to your blog, I learn something new because you've peaked my interest in a new subject.
THANKS & HUGS,
Rett
Hi Sarah, what a wonderful find. I have not seen the jugs before. What a great companion to the one you already had. Adding the sweet pups is perfect. Your MC display in your dining room is gorgeous. I love black and white checks. You have such a talent for pulling it all together.
ReplyDeleteLooks like you have some gorgeous hydrangeas this year too. They are not blooming so good here. Tall and very green but not that many blooms.
Have a nice weekend.
Hugs

They are just STUNNING, Sarah. I love them all....they surely do look great with your MC.
ReplyDeleteI love all of your Mackenzie-Childs pieces and of course your spaniel family all united in your home.
ReplyDeleteI love black and white checks.
She is lovely, Sarah. Whenever I see a little Staffordshire spaniel I think of the front windows of the houses in Aeroskobing, on the island of Aero in Denmark. It seemed that every window held a pair. There was some significance in the way the pairs faced - having to do with seamen and their wives and the faithfulness of those wives.
ReplyDeleteWhat a cutie, Sarah...and a perfect mate to your other spaniel! Love the black and white vignette! Here...finally having a few moments to visit as school starts back for the grands! Have a great week!...hugs...Debbie
