Who's Counting Candles ~ The Chef Celebrates A Birthday

My husband and his twin brother

recently celebrated a significant birthday.

Not saying which one.

Who's counting anyway?

Both these guys requested a

German Chocolate Birthday Cake.

No surprise!

That's what they request every year.

I usually make a traditional German Chocolate,

but this year I made a friend's mother's recipe.

It uses German Chocolate for the icing too.

You'll find a copy of the recipe at the end of the post.

This is a delicious version.

I made the cake, but

this pretty young woman made the birthday

dinner for her dad and uncle.

You can find the recipe for this

scrumptous dish here.

~  Arugula Salad  ~

This healthy salad

included apples and goat cheese.

Dinner is served!

Yum!

Happy Birthday, guys!

Mom's German Chocolate Cake

Icing
1 large can Pet Milk
1 cup sugar
1 stick butter
3 egg yolks
1 pkg. German Chocolate
1 cup or more chopped pecans and coconut

Put first 5 ingredients in a double boiler and cook until thick.  Stir in pecans and coconut before icing cake.  This takes awhile to thicken, so it is important to start the icing before making the cake.

Cake
1 pk. German chocolate
2 cups sugar
2 sticks butter
4 egg yolks
1/2 t salt
1 t vanilla
2 1/2 cups flour (not quite)
1 cup buttermilk
4 egg whites, stiffly beaten

Cream sugar and butter.  Add egg yolks and beat until light and creamy.  Add dry ingredients and buttermilk alternately to the sugar mixture.  Add vanilla.  Melt German Chocolate in 1/2 cup of hot water.  Pour into the batter and fold in 4 egg whites that have been stiffly beaten.  Bake at 350 until done.  After cake is done, turn onto a platter and pour hot icing over the hot cake.

Happy Birthday, Queen of Southern Novels

Michael Lee West

Queen of Southern Novels

Happy 60th Birthday, Michael Lee!

This post is a tribute to

 Michael Lee West,

host of Rattlebridge Farm, Foodie Friday

and author of seven novels with

an eighth one, soon to be published.

Michael Lee lives on a farm

in rural Tennessee

with her husband, son, and

a menagerie of animals.

You can find Michael Lee at her blog,

Rattlebridge Farm

where she shares her love

of gardening, baking, and Yorkies.

I had intended to host a

birthday picnic in the garden,

but Mother Nature didn't cooperate.

Not complaining!  We've had an incredible

12 inches, and it's still raining off and on.

Instead, I moved the celebration

inside to the sun room.

The table is set with all white dishes for

Cuisine Kathleen's Let's Dish Challenge.

I chose green as my accent color,

as I was the recent recipient of a gift package from

Carol sent me a package of cute tags stamped in green

and white napkins with a beautiful lace edge

that she hand crocheted.

I tied a tag to each cup.

This is an adorable idea for

place cards for guests.

Each tag comes

with an engraved heart.

Yes, we all LOVE you,

Michael Lee!

Michael Lee writes with incredible wit,

all the while interweaving delicious vignettes of

food and recipes straight from the kitchens of

her vivid and distinctly southern characters.

Michael Lee's novels will have you

Laughing Out Loud!

Look at Carol's beautiful hand work

in this lovingly crocheted lace edging.

It's a perfect compliment

to the edges of the embossed plates

by Certified International   .   .   .

As well as the graceful

carving on the Mother of Pearl flatware.

I tucked these darling towels by Waverly

between the salad and dinner plates

to separate the white on white of the plates.

They are a perfect match to the green tablecloth

and were a gift from Cuisine Kathleen a few years ago.

I don't think Kathleen will mind that

I mixed in a touch of floral.

Thank again, Kathleen!

~ White, Green, and a Touch of Floral ~

Probably doesn't pass the challenge!

A special thank you to

for the delightful gift package.

Now make a wish and

blow out the candles,

birthday girl!

Happy Birthday, Michael Lee!

I know all you Foodie Friday bakers

are eager to know how to make this special cake.

Lean in closely, and I'll share my secret.

First secure a large bag of packaged cotton candy.

Carefully unwrap and gently pull

apart to fill large martini glass.

Handle as little as possible and work quickly!

Presto, instant birthday cake

cotton candy style!

"Minou, Minou, Minou"

"Minou, Minou, Minou"

Calling all French kitties

and other felines of Blogland.

To celebrate this big boy!

Baby Kitty

is 8 years old today.

Those of us who follow along at Confessions of a Plate Addict know of Debbie's famous staff and her love of all things French. The days of actual pets living here at HFTS were long ago, but we do love a party and wanted to join in the fun.

The Plate Addict Staff is here and ready to party!

So put on your party hat and join the fun.

Our purrrr-fectly paired aristocats are here.

Lilike, the sweet Hungarian mama cat

and her little Duci are eager to join in the fun.

Our hostess today is mademoiselle Gabrielle, le chat.

She is the essence of French country style.

You can read more about Gabrielle and her French friends here.

Gabrielle has brewed cat nip tea

and filled the party bowls with crunchy treats.

This handsome Frenchy is Monsieur Alexandre.

Mademoiselle Angelique, le chat du jardin,

has a fresh bouquet for Baby Kitty.

Bijou has filled her baskets

with Baby Kitty's favorite crunchy, kitty treats.

Sadly this dearest of kitties arrivied en détresse.

In a rush to join the group

~ catastrophe! ~

Her pretty little head crashed to the floor.

How's that for a "blogging blooper", Susan?

Her wobbly head was an accident waiting to happen!

I think she looks like a piece of MacKenzie-Childs,

but actually she's just a copycat

and was a thrifty Goodwill find.

Not that her pedigree makes us

any less sad about this unfortunate accident.

Angelique and Alexandre quickly rushed to her

aide and put the pieces back together again.

Just like Humpty Dumpty!

So the paw-ty could go on as planned!

Tuna cake for the Birthday Boy.

Solid Light Tuna

Only the best for you, Baby Kitty!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY,

BABY KITTY!

It's time for a Kitty Cat Linky Party!
