Whispers of the Heart ~ Valentine's Tablescape Blog Hop

Welcome, friends!
Valentines Day is a mere 17 days away,
and it has been freezing cold here!
Come join me at my cozy winter inspired Valentine's Table and
join my friends for a Valentine's Day Tablescape Blog Hop!
We hope we will inspire you to set your own
Valentine's Day Table.

Thank you to Rita, our amazingly organized and
talented leader and author of the beautiful Panoply
Rita has organized a group of 18 bloggers in the new year to offer
inspiration for creating your own Valentine's Day table.
You'll find links to each at the end of this post.

Anyone who has experienced great loss knows that the exquisite memories of those no longer with us, whisper to our hearts.
It might be as simple as a natural object on the ground or a lady bug landing on your sleeve or crawling across the windshield, but those occasions, same as a smell or sound or anything that sparks a memory,
can feel like a direct message from one whom you have lost.

A Valentine table for two at home was our tradition.
Year after year, the chef would prepare our dinner.
I would set a special table just for two.
"Two hearts are better than one."

Join me this year for Whispers of the Heart, my table set for two
celebrating with a winter scene, for whispers of the heart are like snowflakes, each is unique unto itself, and each gently glides upon my mind, much like a snowflake drifting down upon one's nose.

My snowmen immediately come out to play the first of January.
It is their month and my birthday month!  Since this hop was scheduled for January, and Austin had a recent snowfall, I took the liberty to include these playful snowmen at the table.

I started with a winter wool wrap as a table runner, then repurposed an antique bamboo mirror for an icy base and invited a playful group of snowmen to gather round a tower of valentine sweets.

Meet some of my frosty men!

They are eager to share some sweet treats?

I pulled in two special little catch-all dishes for either side,
gifts from my guy one Christmas decades ago, and
then scattered them with mini hearts.

"It's so much more friendly with two."
~ Winnie the Pooh

"If you are not too long,
I will wait here for you all my life."
~ Oscar Wilde

The plate stack starts with textured snowflake placemats, topped with a Courtly Check charger, then a MKC Brighton Pavilion dinner,
ending with a Johnson Bro's red transfer ware heart shaped plate.
When we first discovered the handmade and hand painted ceramics made in Aurora, NY by MacKenzie-Childs, the chef and I began adding the scalloped dinner plates from the Taylor Series.
Charmed by the variety of whimsical designs, we began
collecting a mix of the individual patterns.

I selected to use the heart shaped Johnson Bro's,
made in England, plates that feature an old castle, as my mind
drifted back over our travels across the European countrysides,
visiting the numerous age old castles, chateaus, and country homes.
The sterling heart nut dishes, also gifts from my guy,
were brought back from his European business trips.

Take my hand, take my whole life too,
for I can't help falling in love with you." ~ Elvis
The antique linens were hand monogramed by my husband's grandmother and gifted to me by my mother-in-law.  She knew right from the start that I loved to set a pretty table and that I appreciated family heirlooms, especially handwork.

My niece made me cookies for my birthday in honor of my sister!

What you do with it is up to you."
I choose to live with gratitude!

Glitter Ville Snowmen Mugs
And always remember to add a touch of whimsy!

Across on the buffet, after dinner hot tea or a cup of coffee awaits.  The darling snowflake napkins were a recent thoughtful Christmas gift.

More of my snowmen also settled onto my large silver tray on the buffet, all cozy and comfy among frosty trees and my budding collection of sterling muffineers or sugar casters.

Winter flowers fill our Evervolving large MKC floral vase,
a cherished Valentine's Day gift from my guy in 2001.

A little close up of the winter branches surrounded by white hydrangeas and white and dusty rose alstroemeria.

My Valentine table was created to recall beautiful memories.
I hope it brings you inspiration to set a table for
anyone you might wish to honor.

Thank you for letting me share my heart.

"How Lucky I am to have something so special
that saying goodbye is so very difficult."

The summer we married, my husband was in graduate school, and I was employed as a teacher. We took a portion of our savings that summer and purchased a sailboat. We christened our Catalina 22, “Hyacinths For The Soul” after Saadi’s poem. Our "Hyacinths" provided years of pleasure.

  1. You certainly have a grand collection of snowmen! Perfect for January (we have had our share of snow and I am ready for sunshine and warmth!). As always, coming to your table is a treat to see all of your special pieces. I especially like your heart dishes - so unique! The vase Monnie bought you is gorgeous and what a special remembrance. I made a bunch of M-C Heart shard/mosaics and never thought to use them as napkin rings - very clever! As always, I enjoyed your post!

  3. Oh, Sarah, what a beautiful love you and Monnie shared. I know you must miss him so. "If you are not too long, I will wait here for you all my life". 💔 it must be a comfort to know he waits for you in everlasting life. What a joy that reunion will be!
Once again, you have my immediate attention with your beautiful elements here. The muffineers with snowmen immediately capture both my attention and my heart. I love that "budding" collection (three is the defining number, lol). All the tokens from the years of life and love - the beautiful nut trays, the Evervolving vase and card, the cherished linens - all such meaningful reminders and treasures. I adore your plate stack, amd have never seen the heart-shaped Johnson Bros tansferware! Did you make the napkin rings from M-C shards? I love those too.
Keep those memories alive. It was an honor to get a glimpse further into the beautiful love you shared. Thank you for participating today, Sarah, always exquisite. ❤️

  16. Oh Sarah, how totally divine. This is just filled with love, as a Valentine table should be. And with joy and whimsy, which I hope carries you through the days that loss brings that are more challenging. The quotes, the memories of your special Valentine dinners, all remind me that you were one of those lucky enough to live a great love story.

As for the table, how pretty. Like you, my snowfolk come out after the holiday and I just love your collection and how you are displaying them on the silver and the mirror. The glitterville mugs, the Johnsonville castle plates -- I love how those take your heart back to your travels together. And I am crushing big time on the snowflake placemats. The best. Sending Valentine love and also (probably) belated birthday wishes your way.
