March ~ 2016

M A R C H ~  2016

As the saying goes,

"March comes in like a lion."

 "Goes out like a lamb."

Typically March begins with cold wintery weather

and goes out with the mild and gentle feel of spring.

Today, here in Texas at least,

March came in like a lamb with a perfect spring-like day.

March 1 ~ National Pig Day

Did you miss this one, or did you celebrate the pig?

Do you know pigs are one of the

most intellectual domesticated animals?

They are very social creatures, can learn tricks,

and some varieties are raised as pets.

Click here to join these cuties for a Pink Pig Party.

All the famous pig personalities will be there.

March 2 ~ Texas Independence Day

Those of you not from Texas,

likely don't have this date highlighted on your calendar,

but it's an official holiday here in Texas.

March 2, 1836 is the date that Texas

declared its independence from Mexico.

It is also the birthday of Sam Houston,

the man who led Texas to victory over

Mexican troops at the Battle of San Jacinto.

March 2 is also the birthday of one of my BFF.

Happy Birthday, Ann!

"How much is that doggie in the window?"

March 10 ~ Sadie Mercedes' Adoption Day

This date is very special here at Hyacinths for the Soul.

It marks the anniversary of when our sweet

Sadie Mercedes came to live with us.

Thank you, Wee Rescue for allowing us

the privilege of adopting this precious girl

who fills our lives with joy beyond measure.

March 14 ~ National Pi Day

National Pi Day celebrates the mathematical constant π.

The digits 3, 1, 4 are the first significant

digits of π, thus the date, 3-1-4.

My good friend and mathematics educator,

Judith @ Botanic Bleu

suggested that I must include this important date.

I plan to celebrate with a pie from my favorite source.

What will you do to celebrate?

March 16 ~ Cuisine Kathleen's
Annual Blog Crawl

Get your green on and join

Cuisine Kathleen's

8th Annual St. Patrick's Blog Crawl.

There are sure to be lots of leprechauns causing mischief

on tabletops across Blogland, and no doubt you are all curious

to see who received the Traveling Shamrock Cloth this year.

You can read about the Traveling Shamrock Cloth here.

March 17 ~ St. Patrick's Day

Lhasa Apso's are from Tibet, not Ireland,

but Miss Sadie will be wearing her sparkly

green bow to celebrate the day.

How do you celebrate St. Patrick's Day?

March 27 ~ Easter

Easter Sunday is on March 27 this year.

Only 26 days away!

Are you getting ready for Easter?

To Market, To Market

To market, to market, to buy a good dinner,
Thoughts of a menu to help us get thinner.

Though it's still very warm here in Texas,
as evenings begin to cool with pleasant breezes
we can once again enjoy alfresco dining on the terrace.

My little wooden pig with his cart full of veggies
inspired the theme for this summer table.

I pulled in a linen scarf that features veggies
to use as a table topper over a green tablecloth.

These little rectangular plates
are the perfect size for a small meal.

Hand painted by local artists, they
add a bit more whimsy to the vegetable theme.

I layered them atop pewter chargers and
colorful plates and linens to compliment
the bright colors of the garden theme.

Mustard Yellow with Aubergine

Aubergine with Fern Green

Flying pig candlesticks
to offer a bit more whimsy.

Dinner is a salad of crispy greens
with orange and yellow peppers,
red onions, and zesty radishes

Along with a steamed salmon steak

To complete this healthy,
colorful, and tasty meal.

Served with a glass of
Chateau St. Michelle Chardonnay

Perfection for a late summer meal.

P is for Pink Pigs' Party

Did your hear?
The pink pigs, Piglet, Pippo, and Porky Pig are
having a dinner party and you're invited!

Many famous personalities will be in attendance . . .
the 3 Little Pigs, of real estate fame,

Miss Petunia, Porky's gal and
the diva of Looney Tunes,

Babe, the courageous little pig who
wanted to be a sheep dog,

Wilbur, the runt of the litter who was saved
by the genius of his sweet friend, Charlotte A. Cavatica,

Ralph, the swimming pig of Aquarena Springs,
known for his "swine dive",
(To see this amazing attraction just click here)

Old McDonald and his pigs,

the first little piggy who went to market,

and of course Miss Piggy, the grand dame of all!
Looks like she has also been to shop the market.
Could it be that she is helping with dinner?

Toot and Puddle have brought along soap
just in case any of you piggies need to wash up for dinner.

It must have been a good day at the market.
Look at all these fresh veggies in tow.

Bill, the largest pig in history
has come with flowers.
 Pink of course!

Gerberas and lisianthus with a touch of hypericum berries.

These little rectangular plates
are the perfect size for a piglet meal.

Hand painted by local artists;
what could be more perfect for a Pink Pig Party

Each plate is layered atop pewter chargers and colorful plates
and linens to compliment the bright colors of the market theme.

Dinner Time!

Doesn't look as if we'll be having roast beef.

These little piggies
are definitely health conscious.

Cold, crispy lettuces, orange and yellow peppers,
red onions, and perfect radishes . . .
just the thing this little diet conscious piggy needs.

Add a small steamed salmon steak . . .

and you'll be eating a tasty but light summer delight.

Help yourself to a glass of
Chateau St. Michelle Chardonnay.

We'll be dining under the stars so
a little candle light is in order.

Oh, look! It's that magical blue hour that Susan told us about on Monday. If you missed her post and you want to capture your own blue hour moment with your camera, click here for information.

Thank you for dining with us this evening.

I wanted to send you home with a
few little licorice piglets for dessert . . .

but it looks like some little piggy
ate every last one!

And that's the end
of the tale.

Goodnight All!
