October 2016

~ Welcome Autumn ~

October has arrived!

I've no idea how September vanished so

quickly, but here we are in the month of October.

I'm not the least bit disappointed!

October ushers in my favorite season, and

fortunately here in Texas, we are having

cooler days and crisp evenings.

You can find the above table setting here

October gave a party;
The leaves by hundreds came~
The Chestnuts, Oaks, and Maples,
And leaves of every name.
The sunshine spread a carpet,
And everything was grand,
Miss Weather led the dancing,
Professor Wind the band.
 ~ George Cooper ~

The month of October is

Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

The looped pink ribbon has come to symbolize the international

campaign begun to raise awareness of the risks of breast cancer,

the value of early detection, and treatment options available.

October is also

Adopt a Shelter Dog Month

We adopted our sweet Sadie over four years ago.

Wee Rescue is a local organization dedicated to

rescuing Lhasa Apsos, Shih Tzus, and Pekingese

from Central Texas shelters.

Fall Festival @ MacKenzie-Childs ~ Aurora, NY

Oh, don't you know I wish I could go to this.

My friend Patti @ Pandora's Box

wrote about last year's festival here.

Landing of Columbus, John Vanderlyn, 1846
Commissioned by Congress for the Capitol Rotunda

October 10, 2016 ~ Columbus Day

Columbus Day became a federal holiday in the US in 1937

and is celebrated the second Monday of October to recognize

the anniversary of the arrival of Christopher Columbus

in the Americas on October 12, 1492.

French Faience World War Commemorative Plate

October 24 ~ United Nations Day

Celebrated since 1948, United Nations Day marks the

anniversary of the 1945 UN Charter,

a foundational treaty to bring together the nations of the

world to prevent another war like WWII from ever occurring.

October 31 ~ Halloween

This is a holiday that needs no introduction,

and is celebrated by children and adults here in

the states as well as in many other countries.

Halloween festivities often include dressing in costume,

special parties, and the custom of children "trick or treating"

from door to door in their neighborhood.

What is your favorite Halloween memory?

  3. Sarah,
I look forward to your monthly series about special dates in the month. Both the Capitol painting of Columbus and the French Faience dish caught my eye. Where did you find the French dish? Is there a story that goes along with that find?

Thanks for sharing at Monday Social.

  4. Another wonderful summary, and what a gorgeous collage to introduce October! Our rescue centers are not as specialized as your wee rescues, but the efforts to encourage adoption are valiant here in our state too. Love your faience commemorative plate, and oh, how I also wish I could be in Aurora for this week's MC fete, too! Looking forward to the series this week, Sarah, and your doors being open for fall. Have a great week.

  6. Love the table setting dear Sarah. Although Oct. will see me turn another year older, I love this month and it is always my favorite.

Hope you noticed 'the bag' in my pics - still going strong and used constantly on the trip to Kenya! What a great time we had - strenuous but interesting, particularly for the wonderful people we met. . . . .and of course the wildlife which was awesome.

    Happy Autumn week.

  7. What a lot October has to offer, it is one of my favourite months. It's the month we got married and so it's the month we go on vacation! Next week we're off to the Greek island of Rhodes to soak up some late Autumn sunshine to set us up for the winter months ahead.
    Happy MM.

  13. Dearest Sarah,
What a lovely post about October.
It is such a lovely month, at least here in Georgia, as the heat from the summer is gone.
We are well settled back in after our trip to Europe for a wedding in the Provence and visiting family and friends. Lots of driving for me but I enjoyed it all.
Love the painting of John Vanderlyn (Dutch descendant): http://www.newnetherlandinstitute.org/history-and-heritage/dutch_americans/john-vanderlyn/
We are all blessed by having such wonderful art, telling the story of a bygone era.
    Blessings to you,
    Mariette

  23. Hello Sarah, Your posts are the best. I only have to come here to know all of the special days to celebrate in October. October is also my birthday month and Fall is my favorite time of the year as well.

Texas is looking good in the collage you featured for Fall. Here in the mountains of NC we too are getting color. It will be three weeks for the best color though. Can't wait.

Thanks for the reminder of Breast cancer month. I will be adding that to my posts.

    Have a wonderful week.
    Hugs, Jeanne

  25. Lots of special days in Oct!! My fav memory is trick or treating at one neighbor's home. She was an elderly woman who would invite us all in for cider and popcorn balls (that she painstakingly made) and let us choose whatever candy we wanted! Just love your pup, sadie is so sweet! We are passing on the MC weekend as college friends are coming from MA for 3 days of gallivanting! Enjoy the cooler weather
