Brigitte Comes To Life

When I first saw Linda Ragno's Garden Ladies by Cooper Oaks Design, I was totally charmed. I just had to stitch this lovely flower lady with her basket of lavender. Wall of Needlepoint Canvases @ Needleworks

Stitching is a favorite pass time and yet another passion in my life. I'm one of those travelers who pulls out the yellow pages when I arrive somewhere and check out the needlepoint shops in town. Anyone else out there do this?

I named her Brigitte, and here she is after I stitched the canvas. Every stitch brought sunshine to my days as my sweet Brigitte came to life!

With Brigitte stitched, I shopped my fabric stash and pulled out some of my favorite Souleiado fabrics from Pierre Deux. With only a small remnant of the blue, a patchwork idea quickly began to evolve.

I worked up a plan,

gathered everything together,

and took it all to my friend who is a master finisher.

Voilà, Brigitte completely finished!

With this sweet face and French fabrics,

I decided she must share the upstairs guest room . . .

with another young French lady

who loves to pick flowers from the garden.

Sophie is a handmade limited edition doll from the Fritzi-Contini Collection. She has always been content to while away the days in her antique Thonet rocker, but I thought she might like to join Brigitte on the wicker settee and visit about gardening.

These two were getting along splendidly,

when all of a sudden 
mademoiselles Gabrielle le chat

and Zoé le lapin called 
out from across the room.

They begged and pleaded and insisted that Brigitte join them in their comfy spot atop the quilt on the bed. The work of Ilonka, a California artist, these two captured my heart back in the 1980s. They always seem to get their way with me, so Brigitte happily snuggled in between these two charmers.

But look who is patiently waiting in my needlepoint basket. She hopes to be stitched up this winter and join the other girls in the French guest room. Until then she seems happy to have two little Russian girls to keep her company. I just hope she doesn't let that rooster crow when the sun comes up.

A Harvest of Horse Apples

Last fall while visiting a friend in Dallas, I learned about Horse Apples. You can read my original post on this interesting fruit here.

I suppose I'd seen them before, but never paid them any attention. Turns out there is a Bois D'Arc tree near my home. It dropped its horse apples into the street for weeks.

I gathered some up and brought them home to enjoy. They fit perfectly in the antique wooden dough bowl I found while in Santa Fe this past summer.

I had a little fun playing with them in the afternoon shadows.

Fresh Flowers Are Always Favorites

As you might imagine from the name of my blog, fresh cut flowers have always been a favorite in our home. So when I saw mention of a "new to me" meme last night while visiting my friend Cherry Chick, I knew what I would post for My Favorite Things this week. Liz @ Rose Vignettes celebrates Fresh-Cut Fridays on the first Friday of the month. With not much time on hand, I decided to share a few mosaics of fresh cut flowers from previous posts.

The flowers can be from one's garden like these zinnias from my summer garden.

Or they can be flowers purchased at the grocery store like these mini green hydrangeas and Yoko Ono mums.

The flowers can come from a garden of a freind like these white snapdragons from my friend Ann.

What ever the source, fresh cut flowers are sure to put a smile on your face, fill your heart with joy, and bring sunshine into your life.

Seasonal Change Out ~ Fall Tableau

Today is the debut of a new weekly party, Before & After hosted by my friend, Kim @ Savvy Southern Style. I packed up my Halloween decor yesterday, but I've yet to put together a new centerpiece for our dining room. Kim says we can share an old or new post, so for this first week I decided to share my Fall Tableau post from last year.

With the recent rain and cooler days, there is now a hint of fall in the air. That combined with all the wonderful fall nesting going on around Blogville, I've been inspired to do a bit of fall nesting myself. I do love this time of year, but there is never a real noticeable change in seasons here in central Texas like in so many other areas of our country. So one has to provide their own touch of seasonal change around their home.

I picked up these bags of pumpkins at the grocery store last week and found the faux acorns at Hobby Lobby. I wasn't certain what I'd do with them, but decided I need to start with something to get a little fall going on in our home.

I thought I'd start with something for the dining room table. I often like to arrange a tableau on a tray so it can be easily moved if I need something different for a dinner. I decided to start with a silver tray and this beautiful pashmina that a friend brought back to me from her summer trip to Egypt.

This silver dish was an eBay purchase in a box lot of silver pieces. You can see that it is very dark with little silver left, but I rather like the look. It gives it a shabby chic look,and actually I don't think shiny silver would look as appropriate for the theme. I was charmed by the squirrel detail. This was my favorite piece in the box.

Next I pulled out a silver bride's basket. It too was an eBay find. I decided to give it a good cleaning with some silver polish, but as you can see, this too is a bit shabby chic.

With these basic pieces I now had a theme in mind. The squirrel offered an obvious link to the acorns and the shawl would guide my choice of flowers.

I found these lilies at the grocery on special for the week.

In addition to the price, I also liked that they were still tight. I know from experience that lilies open slowly, unlike many flowers. I'm having some friends over on Tuesday, so they should be perfect by then.

I cut some yellow blooms from my garden. The yellow bells and golden thryallis make wonderful filler for arrangements.



I filled the silver squirrel dish with the faux acorns and started to place some of the pumpkins across the shawl. I only used the white ones. I didn't like the typical orange pumpkin color with the shawl.

I liked that the bag had a nice mix of plain white pumpkins and some with a dark green and gold in the veins. I scattered more acorns across the pumpkins and the shawl and about the large silver tray.

I mixed in a few purple asters to give a little punch of color. I think the color of the lilies compliments the shawl. I love the deep color of the center as it fades to a lighter orange.

The shawl is beautiful handwoven cotton with deep rich colors.

Mr. Squirrel is very happy with his new found bounty. I think he's set for winter!

Perhaps he'll share with all his brothers and sisters who enjoy our backyard.

I love the look of the contrast within the group of pumpkins and the acorns scattered among them.

Found this little squirrel with his own acorn at Hobby Lobby. Decided he would fit right in.

So there you have it....a simple fall tableau for our dining room table.

Hauntingly Creative

What's out and about this Halloween?

Come along and see some "hauntingly creative" yards and porches.

Pumpkins and gourds are the first sign of Autumn.

Doors of Welcome usher in the Fall Season around neighborhoods.

But Halloween brings the scary scene.

Here we have a bit of "skeletal" creativity with a touch of humor!

A couple of yards full of "boo-tiful" whimsey.

And others with a more frightful touch!

One of my favorites ~ a nod to "south of the border".

Same creative folks gave a nod to the Texas Longhorns last year.
