Mother's Day 2020

Mother's Day 2020
I set a table in tribute to my mother.

My sweet mom lived a long full life,
and as an avid gardener, most of her days
involved working in her garden.

She, herself, was raised by an avid gardener!
One of my fondest memories of my grandmother
is being hand-in-hand with her, among garden flowers,
snipping my favorite sweet peas to make a petite bouquet.

Are you familiar with these old fashioned blooms?
In Victorian Times, when flowers were used as a language
of sorts, the sweet pea bloom meant "lasting pleasure".

For me, gardens create lasting pleasure.
They provide a sense of being one with nature, time spent
digging in dirt, observing the miracle of things sprouting,
blooming, and then fading as the cycle is completed, while
something new opens to take its turn on the garden stage.

I don't have a good sunny spot for sweet peas, so you can imagine
my delight when our  local Grassdale Flower Farm delivered
sweet pea bouquets for curbside pickup at a nearby flower market.

These hand painted floral plates were a street market find in Italy, and though the simple stylized blooms are not sweet peas, the colors are a perfect fit for the bouquet from Grassdale.

I carried home two salad plates and two dinner plates for a table of two with these rather flat plates and a gently scalloped border.
Not heavy like most ceramics, they made a perfect trip souvenir.

I paried them with Ambiance Vintage Garden
chargers and Hester and Cook's gorgeous Woodland Nest placemats, the whimsical art work of Vicki Sawyer.

A small Nature Table bee plate from Anthropologie was added
as a green accent between layers, along with a linen napkin, the handwork of my husband's grandmother in the early 1900s.
The Napoleon Bee flatware is by Wallace.

I think it makes a lovely statement to all gardeners!

With a garden full of birds this time of year,
an added treat should any want to fly in and join us.

So there you have it, a tribute
to my mom, the gardener!

Thank you for joining me today.
I hope you'll leave me a comment and tell me
a little something about your mom.

 Happy Mother's Day ~ 2020

The summer we married, my husband was in graduate school, and I was employed as a teacher. We took a portion of our savings that summer and purchased a sailboat. We christened our Catalina 22, “Hyacinths For The Soul” after Saadi’s poem. Our "Hyacinths" provided years of pleasure.

We celebrated quickly with my mom yesterday as the visitors are limited in her place and we chatted a bit today! Enjoy this day, too, I am sure sadie would have sent you a card if she wasn't participating in self-isolation...lol

  8. Sarah, such a lovely tribute to your mom. I do know she was the avid gardener but did not know this about your grandmother. You have certainly carried on the tradition. The flowers in this post are all so lovely. I wish some of the florists or garden centers would offer curb service here. I have not seen this souvenir from Italy, the set for two is very lovely and a beautiful choice. As you know, I love dishes and it comes from my mom's love of them. Sweet memories of following her around when I was young was embedded in me with this same passion. Have a wonderful week.........

  11. Oh Sarah, what a beautiful spot you have created! The plates from Italy are so unique and pretty, and you've mixed and matched things in true MacKenzie-Childs style! The ceramic watering can {Limoge boxes?} are treasures and being under a cloche really highlights them. So many pretties that any mother would love to enjoy! I could linger here all day....

  12. Hi, Sarah. I love the sweetpeas, we are still going strong from one package of sweetpeas I put in the ground for 59cents in 1985....I love to use them tangled in with roses and peonies. We are so late though with flowers here. Love all your pretties. Thanks for sharing!

  13. This is so beautiful, Sarah. And what a wonderful thing to do it for your mother! My sweet peas have popped up (the green part, not the pink blooms -- it IS Michigan, after all!) and I can't wait. They are a favorite. I love the dishes too. I hope your day was lovely.

  14. The sweet peas are lovely. I really need to plant some.

I just made some pillows out of some worn out tablecloths from my mother. Now when I set out the pillows I think of her.

  15. Lovely tribute to your mom. I am crazy about your Limoges watering cans. Those are very special.
I love the pretty sweet peas. My DIL chose those for her bridesmaids bouquets. They were married in Austin.
How special your mother and grandmother were avid gardeners and you learned so much from them. I know they would be so proud of you.
My mother instilled in me the love of flowers. Her mother and oldest sister loved flowers too. I remember fondly my grandmother and aunt having large cutting gardens of their own. I wish there was a photograph of them but I can only see them from my childhood memories.
Your tablescape is so lovely in memory of your mother.
