President's Day Table

~ Presidents' Day ~
Monday, February 17, 2020
This day always brings to mind memories of my oldest brother who was born on February 22.  He shares both the name and birthdate
of the first President of the United States.

Cherries make me think of
both of these guys named George.

In their honor I set a table
with what else but ~
CHERRIES, of course!

Vintage linens, black and white checks, tartan plaid,
and Mary Engelbreit's own cherry inspired dishes.
Definitely a Mary Engelbreit sort of table!

A vintage cloth
with sassy lacy details . . .

Holds its own below black ruffled
placemats and a bold tartan plaid charger.

Dinner Plate

Salad Plate

Soup or Cereal Bowl

All layered to give the
classic Mary Engelbreit look.

Add a bit of vintage
mother of pearl flatware . . .

And a spoon
with ginkgo leaf detail . . .

A bit more touch of
tartan plaid for good measure . . .

And a bit more
black and white checks.

The special touch
of a vintage toast rack . . .

Paired with the acorn leaf details of a
favorite butter knife finish off the setting.

As you munch on a bite of bread and butter before
lunch, lean in closely, I've a little secret to share.

All the dishes on this table were "thrifty" finds!
"Goodwill Hunting" @ 99¢ a piece

Oh, is that bowl still empty?

How about
a cherry pie . . .

To finish out the layers for this
very cherry table
honoring two guys named George.
I first shared this table in 2011, but I like to bring it
out of the archives to share again and again.
Hope you don't mind seeing a repeat every now and then.

The summer we married, my husband was in graduate school, and I was employed as a teacher. We took a portion of our savings that summer and purchased a sailboat. We christened our Catalina 22, “Hyacinths For The Soul” after Saadi’s poem. Our "Hyacinths" provided years of pleasure.

  1. Sarah, I love your ME cherry dishes paired with tartan and your wonderful vintage lace tablecloth! I missed this post when you originally shared it so thank you for this sweet repeat. Hope your Valentine's Day was just as sweet. ♥

  2. Oh Sarah this is so sweet and clever! I love ME, and her cherries are the perfect pairing with Courtly Check! I love the sentiment behind your President's Day table, and of course the cherry pie is perfect! What a delightful way to begin my day ❤️

  3. Love ME as you know and Estelle would love your table;) I have tablecloths like yours form my dad's them but ironing them is a chore and a half..when I entertained lol..;)

  4. Sarah, the ME dishes are too cute, what a find. I love the cherries paired with the tartan and your beautiful lace tablecloth. The cherry pie looks delicious!

  5. I love to see beautiful posts from the archives. What a shame not to share such loveliness again so thanks for the ME repost. This is such a cheerful pattern Sarah and I love how you paired it with tartan and CC. The attention to detail with mother of pearl flatware and vintage linen, so pretty. I love that you set this table for your brother George and the other George, the President. The cherry pie is icing on the cake!

  6. Love this table is very cherry. I can't believe the dishes everyone finds at Goodwill in other parts of the country. Ours is terrible, mostly clothing.

A piece of cherry pie please.

  7. Love this, Sarah. And I don't mind one from the archives, especially when I haven't seen it before! I have some of those tartan plaid dishes, nothing to make any kind of real set, just random finds. Lovely combination you have with all the CC and other vintage pieces.

  8. Dearest Sarah,
Lovely table setting in all and in honor of the two favorite Georges you mentioned is quite appropriate.
Your lovely toast rack also makes a perfect cocktail napkin holder.

  9. Oh, don't you just adore Mary Engelbreit? I do -- her work always makes me happy. And I love your toast racks. I thought I was the only person in the U.S. with toast racks and I'm thrilled to see them at your table too!

  10. I am so glad you re ran this post as I must of missed it the first go around. I love a good cherry theme. Was your brother named in honor of Washington?
