S is for Saluki

S is for Saluki

Salukis are considered the most ancient breed of domestic dogs.

Evidence of these dogs have been found in ancient Egyptian tombs.

A year ago August, I met a beautiful example of this breed.

Meet Wells!

I knew nothing of Salukis before I was introduced to this

beautiful Slauki rescue while visiting friends in Santa Fe.

Wells, gentle, reserved, and extremely sweet,

immediately stole my heart.

The breed came to the Western world around 1900

and by 1928 was recognized by AKC.

Originally used by Arab nomads to hunt gazelles, foxes, and hares

in the desert, the breed was considered "noble" and allowed

to live within the tents with their owners.

The Gazelle Hound is a common name for a Saluki.

Of course, S is also for Sadie,

the sweetest girl ever and the one who

steals our hearts daily!

Happy First Day of Autumn!

The summer we married, my husband was in graduate school, and I was employed as a teacher. We took a portion of our savings that summer and purchased a sailboat. We christened our Catalina 22, “Hyacinths For The Soul” after Saadi’s poem. Our "Hyacinths" provided years of pleasure.

  3. Oh Sarah, how sweet a post. I've never heard of this breed, but it reminds me a bit of a greyhound or whippet. I bet your Sadie was quite jealous when you returned from that touching visit. Thanks for sharing the info on the breed.

  14. How sweet this dog seems Sarah, and you look so loving toward her. Your Sadie is so adorable, her expression so much like our Jasmin's Razzy who is a Yorkie. . . . . I love small doggies!
Sarah, sadly Maggie and won't meet up en France - yet again we'll miss being in the same place at the same time. As Maggie said - it seems to be Murphy's Law working against us. Well we try and, just like meeting up with you, continue to hope it will work one of these days! I think the 3 of us need to meet together - how fun that would be.
Off this evening on the London flight - connect to Paris in the morning and hope to be ensconced in our hotel near L'Opera by mid- afternoon - time for a quick walk about, and supper, if we can managed to keep our eyes open! Next day we meet up with our friends and board the first ship. I'll post a little more later today showing exactly where we'll be sailing etc.

Take care dear - enjoy these Autumn days - hopefully it's cooler there by now as it here, I almost don't want to leave town!
    Hugs - Mary

  19. Salukis are wonderful and loving dogs. Pharaoh dogs are too. I adopted a Pharaoh dog while I lived in Bahrain after a sweet dog had her pups under my carport. She had six pups and I was able to find three of them homes. The others we sadly had to euthanize because I could not find homes and could not just let them go. My neighbor and I took them to a local vet and held each one as it was put to sleep. It was one of the worst days of my life. Yet I knew that if I did not, they would be left to a life of misery. Not all cultures adore and respect dogs as we do. Sadie is very precious too ~ didn't want to leave her out.

  26. Sarah,

Wells is a beautiful creature (as is Sadie!). I smiled reading this post as I was so interested in getting a Saluki well over 10 years ago after we lost our Shadow. All of our dogs came from shelters and I had this idea in my head to get a purebred dog...put some thought into it. The Saluki was one that really interested me, not only because of their beauty but temperament as well. I was also reading up on the Ibizan Hound...similar in that they were popular with royalty in the Egyptian days. The latter won out as I was able to meet the breeder in Southern Illinois. The closet breeder of Saluki pups entailed a trip to Arizona.

The story ends with our giving Edmund to a farmer in Wisconsin. He was large and needed to run. He wasn't happy in our little house in the city. We really loved those 4 years though!

And on a final note---S is for Sarah!
