Fresh New Beginnings

January is a month of fresh beginnings.
I enjoy the sparseness of things after the tree is
down and other Christmas decorations
are packed away till next December.

To start off the new year, I gave the buffet a simple
vignette with a small painting, a touch of greens, and a
favorite MacKenzie-Childs vase filled with peonies.

The vase is the Cheltenham Thistle Vase.
It features sculptured thistle petals, hand-painted
Courtly Checks and Stripes, and a base of faux marble.
All of the work is done by talented artistans at
MacKenzie-Childs in Aurora, New York.
To create the faux marble, the artists paint with
natural sea sponges and use a bird
feather to create the veining.

Blush and pink peonies are the perfect mix
to give a nod to a fresh beginning.

Fluffy and full of fragrance, I was surprised to find
a bouquet of peonies available at the market.

Light and delicate, much like the
fresh feeling of a clean slate of the new year.

Here's to fresh beginnings!

The summer we married, my husband was in graduate school, and I was employed as a teacher. We took a portion of our savings that summer and purchased a sailboat. We christened our Catalina 22, “Hyacinths For The Soul” after Saadi’s poem. Our "Hyacinths" provided years of pleasure.

  7. Your peonies are lovely.

My kids are always asking me what I want for Christmas, Valentine's Day, Mother's Day, etc. After seeing all your Courtly Checks, I have starting making a list of the Courtly Checks items I would like. That way they can choose which one they want to buy me.

  17. Hi Sarah,

Your vase is very pretty; I love Scottish thistle flowers, so that shape really intrigues me. Those peonies are just gorgeous! How wonderful to find those in the midst of winter -- one of my favorite flowers. Fresh new beginnings are my favorite part about this time of the year. I enjoyed your post and hope you have a good weekend!

  21. Such a lovely post Sarah. I love the pink peonies in the MC vase. Absolutely perfect! I noticed peonies in Whole Foods here in So. FL last week. It seems to early to have them in store, but they were so pretty and I was so tempted to bring home the arrangement.

And I agree about the refreshing feeling that happens after all the decorations are down. I've been getting rid of a lot of clutter lately. Hope all is well with you.

  24. Beautiful and I love peonies, but unfortunately we can't get them very often here in So CA.

I like fresh beginnings - and all my stuff is put away hopefully for another year. Like everything fresh and decluttered.

Stay warm and have a wonderful week.

  25. Sarah,
Thanks so much for stopping by!! If I did not have my floored attic, I do not know what i would do as far as storage was concerned. We do rent a storage shed for outdoor decoration and seasonal things....
I love your Mackenzie Child's pieces. So pretty ! Soon I will be posting my Kitchen Winter Hutch. I have dishes that I bought in Wegman's now in there. The pattern is Holiday Harlequin and they have the same look of Mackenzie Child's with the black and white Chevron design..

  26. Dearest Sara,
You sure did find a picture perfect nosegay of fresh peonies! How lovely in this post.
Feeling great after having sang the National Anthem with our choir yesterday at a Georgia Basketball game in Athens, UGA. Got compliments on my oversized Escada Rose sweater, appropriate for the UGA Bulldog win at the Rose Bowl lately.
    Sending you hugs,
    Mariette

  34. Fresh and beautiful new beginnings Sarah! I honestly don't think I've ever seen cut peonies for sale ... Especially this time of year -- what a wonderful small miracle to find them... and they perfect in that color! (One of my favorite spring flowers when we had our Oregon home, but another one I don't see often now that we spend most Springs here in Florida).

  35. Peonies are such pretty flowers; I'm surprised to see them in January. They look lovely in your black and white vase.

  36. A nice touch to place your vignette on a tray - makes it look so 'together'. Who would have thought to use a feather for painting? Perhaps this is why I am not that sort of artist. Thanks for sharing your 'new beginning'.
