June 4, 2016 ~ National Trails Day
Butler Trail and Lady Bird Lake ~ Austin, TX
National Trails Day is held the first Saturday in June.
It's a day in which the American Hiking Society
sponsors events all across the country, including
hiking, biking, horseback riding, paddling trips,
birdwatching, geocaching, stewardship projects, and more.
I plan to take to the trails at the Lady Bird Wildflower Center
or perhaps walk the Butler Trail around Lady Bird Lake.
June 9, 2016 ~ National Celebration of Reading
Book and Author Luncheon Quilt
Displayed in New Braunfels, Texas, 2012
A special National Celebration of Reading,
sponsored by the
Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy,
will be held on June 9th to celebrate
the power of literacy and to commemorate the
25th Anniversary of the National Literacy Act
signed into law by President George H. W. Bush.
You can find details here.
June 14th ~ National Flag Day
Although many states had designated a special
day to honor the US flag each year,
it wasn't until 1949 that President Truman signed an
Act of Congress designating June 14th of each year as
National Flag Day.
June 18th ~ International Picnic Day
Pack your picnic basket and head out to your favorite park or lake.
When we had our sailboat, we always packed a picnic basket
for a little alfresco dining on the water.
The basket above is the one my dad gave to me
when I headed off to attend the University of Texas.
With all the public parks and lakes in and around Austin,
it was a perfect "send off" gift. That was 50 years ago!
Father's Day would be the perfect time to
pack a picnic basket, spread a blanket, and treat your dad to
a special picnic in the beautiful outdoors.
June 20th ~ Summer Solstice
The summer solstice is the longest day of the year
and marks the beginning of summer.
Happy Summer All!

The summer we married, my husband was in graduate school, and I was employed as a teacher. We took a portion of our savings that summer and purchased a sailboat. We christened our Catalina 22, “Hyacinths For The Soul” after Saadi’s poem. Our "Hyacinths" provided years of pleasure.

Sweetest Sarah,
ReplyDeletewhat an involving program you have for the month that's just begun, enjoy it, my friend !
Hope you had a lovely week and so grateful for what you share I'm wishing you all my best for your weekend
Dany
I love June, and you've captured many of the reasons why, and oh, so beautifully!
ReplyDeleteJune is one of my favorite months, and we typically join the retired Forest Ranger for a hike near our camp for National Trails Day. We have learned so much from Gary over the years. He introduced to a hidden treasure, the Showy Ladyslipper, on one of his hikes. Enjoy your hike today!
ReplyDeleteJune was always my favorite month for many reasons. You've spotlighted a lot of wonderful ways to enjoy this month. If I were in Austin I would meet you and we could chat and get our walks at Butler Trail while enjoying the scenery of Lady Bird Lake, love that pic with the Austin skyline. What a lovely picnic basket and treasured gift from your dad! Have a wonderful summer Sarah………..
ReplyDeleteIt seems that June is packed with fun days. And speaking of packing, your picnic basket is brilliant, Sarah!

June certainly is a busy month! We can a prom, a graduation and few birthdays to the calendar at my house...oh...and a brand new baby, too!! I'm going to be a great aunt again any day now! :) Happy June!
ReplyDeleteJune is such a great month and includes my birthday on the 9th!! LOL!!
ReplyDeletehugs,
Linda
What a lovely post. I love the quilt! I've wanted to make one like that. i'll have to pin!
ReplyDeleteThanks for linking so I could come by. Come over and visit!
June has always been my favourite month (I'm a June baby) as it always heralds the start of summer, if only the sun would shine I'm so tired of all this rain. At least we're not had floods here as the poor people in Paris and villages on the banks of the Seine have been this week.
ReplyDeleteWhat books are you reading this summer, dear friend?
June is a special month, full of activities. My Mom's birthday and 4 of my grandchildren's birthdays. Love the quilt! I so admire people for their skills. Reading is so important, so I am glad there is a special day for that. You have captured many of June's special days Sarah! I still love the picnic basket! Happy Sunday!
ReplyDeletegreat post Sarah....I love that your Dad gifted you a picnic basket...very sentimental.xo Lynn
ReplyDeleteYou're so good at highlighting each month's events, Sarah, and I appreciate it!
ReplyDeleteGood morning, Sarah. What a lot of special days there are in June! I would certainly join in with reading and hiking and then, perhaps a picnic. If we do it all on Father's Day we'll have a great day! Your picnic basket is a treasure. I still have one that was a wedding gift nearly 43 years ago, and it is used every summer.
ReplyDeleteSarah, I forgot to mention that we love geocaching. We have the app on our iPhone, and when we are in a new area, I click on Find Nearby Caches and it takes us to some lovely areas.
ReplyDeleteDearest Sarah,
ReplyDeleteNational Trails Day would be very appealing to me! Provided that the weather would be cooperating well.
We are having heavy rains right now and that will last till Tuesday. Good for the farmers but not so good for those that like to bike or walk. We just got home from biking today when it started to rain.
Sending you hugs,
Mariette
A lot of great days in June! I love the thought of National Reading Day and would love to visit Lady Bird's Wildlife Center someday. Enjoy your week, sweet Sarah.
ReplyDeleteGee, Flag Day, Father's Day, picnics, sunflowers ... Can't get much more American than that! The trails and the lake there are lovely. Since I read every day, I will definitely be participating in the National Reading Day.
ReplyDeleteNever realized there was so many special days in June.
ReplyDeleteSarah,
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for reminding us of all the special days in June!! Thanks too for dropping by!!
Hugs,
Deb
What a wonderful picnic basket Sarah, made more special as a gift from your Dad! I'm in awe of that wonderful and creative book quilt too! Happy June!
ReplyDeleteHello Sarah, Another beautiful post Love the quilt, the American flag display, The picnic basket and the wonderful sun flowers. National Picnic Day is a great idea. Smile.
ReplyDeleteThanks for two awesome posts for Blue monday.
Hugs, Jeanne
Sarah, Austin looks like such a beautiful city with the parks and trails. Someday I will come down! I can't believe how lucky you are to have that wonderful picnic basket from your father. You must be reminded of him every time you use it. June is one of my favorite months. The weather can be so pleasant up here, with snows gone and the heat not yet arrived. I'm looking forward to seeing what you show us every month! Linda
