Craft shows were popular in the 1980s and 1990s,
and I started picking up handmade figures.
The obsession has continued, though sourcing
handmade figures is not as easy as it once was.
when an Etsy seller was offering this charmer.
As it's the Year of the Horse, how could I refuse to add it?
It's not signed or dated, but looks handmade.
When one turns the handle on the lower left,
the horse and rider gallop.
Today's summer table inspiration came from
this little guy, a Target Dollar Bin whimsy.
I couldn't resist him because "my chef" was an
enthusiastic fan of hotdogs, especially for summer parties.
I brought his "firecracker" friend home as well.
After all, what patriotic table is complete without a firecracker?
My centerpiece is simply a dough bowl filled with a jumble of
various patriotic themed toys and such that I have among
my long developed collected patriotic stash.
Notice that among the mix is my antique French meat cleaver in the shape of a pony, another nod to Year of the Horse.
Often called hachoirs, these clever hand-forged cleavers
are shaped in various animal forms.
They are folk art charmers of the 19th century.
I set my serving table with patriotic inspired dishes
and linens from among my tabletop stash.
Guests will serve themselves and head outside to the terrace.
Our jacquard-woven cotton napkins are years old.
We purchased them new from Sur La Table, though they are
reminiscent of the turkey-red French linens from the 1800s.
Simply rolled and tied with patriotic ribbon makes them easy to carry.
I set out flatware, but with a menu of chili dogs,
chips, and corn on the cob, it's not needed.
It's lean and flavorful!
with mustard and pickles.
I say, the perfect, easy summer meal!
Non-alcoholic drinks sourced for
their fun patriotic packaging.
Mini cupcakes and patriotic cookie
bites make for a simple dessert.
The cute tiered trays are ceramic
and sourced in the those Target $ Bins.
Pretty cute and stylish for 5 dollars!
I added a patriotic ribbon and a mini flag to
my MKC turtle tureen full of chocolate turtles.

I love your whimsical little firecracker and uncle sam hot dog you got at Target. I always seem to be a day late and a dollar short when those bargains appear. Of course it might have to do with the fact that I almost always purchase on-line so I don't get to "see" those little specials. You have so many patriotic elements to not only your table but to other parts of your home. They are so festive. Have a great and wonderful June and of course July for the BIG celebration!🎠❤️🤍💙🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
It has been so much fun looking at all of the beautiful patriotic tables today. I am astounded at how much patriotic table decor there is. What I love about your table, because I am a huge fan of cabinets of curiosity, is your centerpiece. What a conversation piece that must be with people looking at each and every little themed item in that bowl. What fun!
ReplyDeleteSarah, I always anticipate seeing collections each time I visit your blog, and this summer tablescape is full of fun items once again. Several of these patriotic items I have not seen before (apart from the newest Uncle Sam on horse, which is amazing). That meat cleaver is fantastic, and I wondered what that was when I blew up the image to see all the details. As a dealer, that is new to me, and I love learning, especially about primitives, as my sister who recently passed was our resident primitive expert. She would've love that. The table elements are each deserving of comment, but I am most drawn to the napkins and turtle, love them both! The Target finds are wonderful. Those have to be grabbed when they come out, or one misses out! The food items are the consummate summer gathering meal (but I am a chili and cole slaw proponent!). I love seeing your hand-stitched items too. Thank you for bringing your years of quality collecting to our tablescaping events. Not only are they fun finds, but rich in history and meaning too. I always appreciate that from you!

ReplyDeleteDearest Sarah I always look forward to your attention to detail for your tables and vignettes. The folk art Uncle Sam pieces are amazing. I used to love going to the Craft shows and finding one of a kind handmade objects. The charming horse and rider was a wonderful find to add to your collection. How fun is the Target Dollar Bin little guy and the sweet memories of “your chef” who was a fan of hotdogs! The “firecracker” friend adds more whimsical fun! The dough bowl centerpiece of patriotic themed toys and such provides interest and a great alternative to a floral centerpiece. A serving table full of patriotic inspired dishes and linens for guests to serve themselves and proceed to the terrace is a lovely way to entertain. I would enjoy a smoked bratwurst on a brioche bun along with all of the condiments and yum, roasted corn on the cob! The sweets are the perfect ending to a perfect celebration honoring America’s 250th birthday!🇺🇸❤️🤍💙🇺🇸

Such a lovely collection of American memorabilia, Sarah. It perfectly suits your presentation and lovely celebration of the Fourth of July. I fell in love with your newly found horse and would have displayed just as proudly as you have. The fact that he moves at the turn of a wheel is wonderful.

Oh Sarah! Your table is a delight to behold. The patriotic hot dog...I can't even...so fun!! I love your collection of Uncle Sam's and your centrepiece certainly makes a wonderful conversation piece! If I were a guest at your table, I also would want to know the story behind all these lovely pieces. I am 100% with you on your perfect summer meal - we usually have potato salad with our burgers and "dogs" but the roaster corn looks like a delicious alternative that I can't wait to try. And yes please, I'll have a chocolate turtle from Mr. Turtle's stash. Thank you for sharing all this wonderful inspiration and wishing you a happy July 4th and a glorious summer!

ReplyDeleteSarah, I think hosting a buffet for the Fourth is a splendid idea, especially when it's set up inside and you can usher your guests outside to enjoy what they've decided on. You have styled a terrific display of patriotic decor that will pause your guests until they've had a chance to study each interesting/fun/whimsical/hand-crafted item in detail, before sampling your delicious menu. I'm particularly smitten by your collection of Uncle Sams -- I'd go back for a second look! Have a happy Fourth!
