Autumn Traditions, A Blog Tour

HOWDY, Y'ALL!

I'm joining a group of Texas bloggers
for our annual Fall Blog Tour.

Last year I shared fall Texas style around my home.
You can view that post here.

Touches of fall added here and there around the house
are a nod to my favorite season of cooler temps
and the earthy colors that I'm drawn to.

Today's post is more about favorite fall traditions
that I thought I'd share with my readers.

If it's fall in Texas, that means it's time for me to head on over
to the beautiful area around Round Top, Texas
for the annual Antiques Festival.

Big Red Barn ~ The Show That Started It All
This year was the Golden Anniversary of the antiques show
that started the incredible phenomenon of the biannual
Round Top Antiques Festival.

Two favorites I left behind.
I admit that I haven't been attending for fifty years, but I can
certainly say I shopped Emma Lee Tourney's original show at the Riffle Hall in the 1980s when it was the solo venue.

Gorgeous Display of Copper and Staffordshire Pieces
Over the years the original show grew, eventually moved to it's current location at the Big Red Barn, and spawned hundreds of other antique venues which open around the same time.

The Garden Company, Marburger Farm
Marburger Farm is one of those shows, and it's a favorite.
I wouldn't miss this show!  There are over 350 unique dealers  from across the US and Europe, and all offer quality antiques and
vintage finds.  Each space is styled with amazingly original and creative vignettes, tablescapes, and displays, all there to inspire.

Cottonseed Trading Company Main Display
One of my favorite vendors is Cottonseed Trading Company from Alabama.  Marsha and David Smith are the creative duo behind the incredible visual treats one finds when visiting their space.
Last year most of their booth was sold out within
hours after the show opened.

Cottonseed Trading Company Tablescape
Each show Marsha sets several creative and inspiring tables.
Click here to see a post on one of her spring tables from years past.

More Gorgeous Copper For My Chef
Yes, shopping Marburger is a unique experience,
one that reminds me of shopping the wonderful
antique markets in France and the UK.

Another tradition is the annual purchase of bittersweet and pumpkins.  These seem to signal that fall has arrived, and that it's time to add those special fall touches to our home.

This year I added bittersweet to my MacKenzie-Childs three tiered stand, topping off each Courtly Check planter with a baby boo.
The Heirloom Needlepoint Pumpkins are the creative offerings from SM Wollman Designs sold online here.

This darling pumpkin from my friend Patti @ Pandora's Box
is the perfect touch in my home.  If you click over to Patti's link above, you'll see lots of fall inspiration in her home.

The cooler temps of fall inspire me to spend time in the kitchen.
I like to bake mini loaves of quick breads to take
to friends as a "Welcome Autumn" gift.
It's a favorite fall tradition.

I also like to tie a bow on the stem of a special pumpkin
and deliver that instead of flowers.

A complete post on this
banana nut bread is found here.

Last but not least, pumpkins and fall annuals are always added to
our front porch to provide a festive fall welcome at home.
Simple fall traditions!

  2. There is so much eye candy at Marburger, love their displays. Your home is filled with beautiful fall pieces, and I love fall. I borrowed your idea to tie a bow on the stem of a special pumpkin and delivered to a neighbor to welcome their Lil Pumpkin into our world. Thanks for the wonderful tour!

  6. Marburger certainly looks like a fun way to spend a day! Your home looks so warm with your autumn decor - I especially like your 3 tiered display with the bittersweet and checked pots (I might use that idea if i can find some bittersweet!!) The needlepoint pumpkins are stunning! Happy Fall!

  7. Sarah, I would love to attend Round Top, but I would see so much that I would want to buy, and I am trying to stop my habit. Your beautiful and warm vignettes are the perfect autumn touches...you style MC flawlessly! Happy Wednesday!

  8. Oh, dear Sarah, your styling is impeccable (your MKC tiered stand with bittersweet & boos, and those n'point pumpkins!), and so is your taste in antiques! Drooling over the ones you left behind - what exactly is that handled item with hound? Was that ivorine? What was its original purpose?
I think I could handle a show with 350 dealers quite well, but 3,500 is overwhelming, as so many of these venues have become! Any favorite of yours (such as Cottonseed Trading) would soon become a favorite of mine, I'm certain.
    Happy [finally] Fall!

I loved the review of the fall Round Top. I thought I was going to get to attend the spring show last year but it didn't work out. I'm still hoping to go someday.

  24. Hi, Sarah! What a wonderful post today. My hubby and I are seriously considering a motorhome trip to Round Top, but I have a question: do all the same vendors stay there whether it's the fall, winter or spring show? We're in So. CA, so the trip will take some planning. But what an adventure it would be!

  25. Sarah, I love your fall traditions. I bet the antique festival is so much fun. Your fall touches are beautiful!

  26. My dear Sarah, I often believe we share one decorating heart. We are drawn to the same things time and time again. Don't you love those round bales of hay in the Texas countryside? When we lived in Middleburg, Virginia in a pre-Civil War built farmhouse, we had many round bales on the property. I used to call them "lawn art". Oh the beautiful copper and Staffordshire too! The Garden Company is one of my favorite spots and I often stop there on the way up to Round Top, or on the way home. Have you had lunch at their Market Cafe? Wonderful! We are so lucky to live here!!

    Big Texas Hugs,
    Susan and Bentley

  27. Hi Sarah,
Thank you for the tour of the Round Top Antiques Show...It looks so lovely...one day I will get there. I have to be content with the First Monday Canton Flea Market in Texas for now. The needlepoint pumpkins are just to die for! Very unique. I make my own fabric pumpkins out of vintage beaded evening gowns, so I appreciate an original pumpkin idea!! Thank you for your inspiration.

  44. Dearest Sarah,
Always a joy with lots of surprises when visiting your blog!
Yes, such kind of upscale quality antique shows are worth the time, instead of having to rummage to the majority of junk...
There are such artistic women that can add a very special touch to an autumn setting.
But you yourself belong in that talented group of being a perfect stylist and photographer.
LOVE the idea of baking a small loaf of bread for taking as a gift.
As a matter of fact, I have several of those special French (yes, made of upscale French fabrics + vintage and made IN FRANCE!) baguette bags listed in my eBay sales... You no doubt know about them and I love such Gifts of Love with a home baked item to indulge in over coffee or tea. http://ebay.to/2xYFuIW
Sending you autumn blessings and enjoy this cosy time of the year!

  50. Wonderful post, Sarah! A nice tour of the antique venues and history. I've been hearing about Round Top since the day I started blogging. It would be fantastic to go one day.

This, mixed with some of your favorite things makes for a festive look at autumn in Texas. I love that you bake for your friends. I'll have a peek at your Banana Bread, my favorite! I recently found a recipe for Lemon Zucchini Bread, and I'm excited to give it a shot. I hope to share the recipe next post.
