It's the last week of October 2020, and
I've noticed a lot of activity around here.
The girls, as I call them, you know,
members of the Black Hat Society,
have flown in to gather round the table.
They each have their own personality, and
rest assured, each one is a good witch,
ready to help with Halloween fun.
I was asked to style a Halloween table with elements
from my collection of French Quimper pottery.

Quimper pottery comes in various forms and decor,
though Halloween isn't a typical motif.
The antique witch plate is not in my collection, but it inspired this pair of
limited edition witch plates which were produced in 2010.
Join me for breakfast with "the girls".
Let's eat, drink, and be scary!"
We can start with a pumpkin muffin.
Sit and visit with these sweet girls
while I prepare our breakfast.
You might note the plates are not as detailed as the antique version,
yet I find them charming for a touch of whimsy on the table.
A different witch and border on each plate.
Do you have a favorite?
I used my favorite black and white ruffled linens from
Crown Linen Designs as my base and layerd them
with a smaller ruffled black placemat, green rimmed charger,
and orange and black buffalo check napkins.
Silver flatware. with French ivory handles, is vintage.
Our dining room table is a dropleaf that opens to an oval.
It is not easy to find table linens that offer a good fit,
so generally I simply use placemats.
For this table, I wanted to repeat the orange and
black buffalo check, but my round cloth was too small.
What I did was lay it crosswise on the center of the table and then folded it to make pleats on either side of the center line.
I liked the look, especially the ruffle effect that was
a nod to the ruffled placemats and napkins.
My friend Rita @ Panoply taught me how to
make these cute witch hat napkin folds.
You simply roll a ruffled napkin, slide down a ring,
and then fluff out the ruffle at the base to create the illusion of a brim.
They stand up perfectly and make the cutest witch hat!
Be sure to pop over to visit Rita where she shares beautiful tables.
Waffles with berries and whipped cream and
a side of sausage is the menu for the morning.

Sarah, what a treat to see your black hat society breakfast today! Wow, your Quimper collection never ceases to amaze. I love those witch plates, and don't ever remember seeing them before. Our table is also an oval, and I really like how you style your tablecloth on the cross section with the pleats. Thank you for the shout out. What I'd love even more is to be able to share food and conversation at the table with you!
ReplyDeleteSarah,

SaRAH, I so admire your beautiful collections, whether is is Quimper, MKC or your fun dolls. The Black hat society is a fun group full of whimsy. Those Quimper plates are darling. Cute display of napkins too. A breakfast with them would be so fun!
ReplyDeleteI know this was fun for you to set-up this delicious breakfast for your Black Hat Society group! The little witches are not so scary and rather very cute. The two plates are beautifully painted and I love both borders! Beautiful presentation of your of your Halloween collectibles Sarah..............
ReplyDeleteSuch a lovely post, I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. I am very envious of your Quimper, it is gorgeous. I never see Quimper on our area. There use to be a booth at the Thomasville Antique Show (an excellent antique show) that had lots and lots of Quimper but the past few years she has not been there. I think she lives in NJ so it may have been difficult for her. I miss seeing that booth. Do you have a good source for Quimper?

Great post to bring in the week of halloween!! The Quimper Halloween plates are really unique and I love your tablecloth fold - very clever!
ReplyDeleteHow enchanting!
ReplyDeleteI love this, Sarah! I didn't know you collected Quimper. I wish I did -- I've loved it for a long time but never been able to find it around here. (Probably too late to start another collection!) I really like the fun witchy plates. (It doesn't have to be vintage or antique to be wonderful). And your sweet little black hat girls are so darned cute and all so different. I am taken to a magical world here and it's a wonderful way to begin the day.
ReplyDeleteSarah, I love that you and your witches are getting together this year. Great place settings. Since the Cottage Witch is self quaranteening this year I haven't done any Halloween. Will do a little Thanksgiving and then, happily, straight on to Christmas. I am awaiting delivery of the sweet place mats. They certainly can be used in a number of pretty ways..Stay well..xxoJudy
ReplyDeleteSarah, As you know I’m a proud card-carrying member of The Black Hat Society! I love your table with all ‘the girls’! Your Quimper plates are wonderful and a perfect addition to your collection. I love your layers and linens and I was wowed by Rita’s witch hat napkin fold too! Happy Halloween!
ReplyDeleteI had no idea that Quimper made witch plates. Your collection is really cool! :D
ReplyDeleteI like your Halloween decor. Everything is festive and pretty! Enjoy your weekend!
