S is for Saluki
Salukis are considered the most ancient breed of domestic dogs.
Evidence of these dogs have been found in ancient Egyptian tombs.
A year ago August, I met a beautiful example of this breed.
Meet Wells!
I knew nothing of Salukis before I was introduced to this
beautiful Slauki rescue while visiting friends in Santa Fe.
Wells, gentle, reserved, and extremely sweet,
immediately stole my heart.
The breed came to the Western world around 1900
and by 1928 was recognized by AKC.
Originally used by Arab nomads to hunt gazelles, foxes, and hares
in the desert, the breed was considered "noble" and allowed
to live within the tents with their owners.
The Gazelle Hound is a common name for a Saluki.

Oh Sarah, that last photo of you with the Saluki is just beautiful. Beautiful dog, but don't tell Sadie who is adorable. Dianne
ReplyDeleteBeautiful dog, did you adopt her? Sadie is a cutie. Don't you just love dogs? They are so loyal and are always so happy to see you even if your only gone a few minutes.
ReplyDeleteHave a great rest of the week.
Mary
Oh Sarah, how sweet a post. I've never heard of this breed, but it reminds me a bit of a greyhound or whippet. I bet your Sadie was quite jealous when you returned from that touching visit. Thanks for sharing the info on the breed.

ReplyDeleteWhat a pretty girl, Sarah! I've read about this breed; they're sight hounds and they're able to run very fast. Your Sadie is a little cutie. :-D
ReplyDeleteHave a great week and Happy Fall!
Hugs,
Denise at Forest Manor
What a pretty girl...I love that first photo of the two of you! Your Sadie is a sweetie too!
ReplyDeleteYou are so lovely!
Gros bisous ❀
oh she's beautiful! reminds me of a greyhound or Italian greyhound! Sadie is adorable as well!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful photos Sarah! Very interesting post too. I'd never heard of the Salukis breed.
ReplyDeleteOh how beautiful she is! I have three Saluki rescues and I can promise they are as sweet as they are lovely when they get to know you. Thank you for your wonderful post!
ReplyDeleteLooks like this Saluki fell in love with you too! Love the pictures of both of you. Sadie is adorable! Happy fall!
ReplyDeleteThe Saluki is beautiful and looks so lovable too! And that Saide - what a sweet face!
ReplyDeleteShelley
What a beautiful breed. I love dogs and we have three!
ReplyDeleteHow sweet this dog seems Sarah, and you look so loving toward her. Your Sadie is so adorable, her expression so much like our Jasmin's Razzy who is a Yorkie. . . . . I love small doggies!
ReplyDeleteSarah, sadly Maggie and won't meet up en France - yet again we'll miss being in the same place at the same time. As Maggie said - it seems to be Murphy's Law working against us. Well we try and, just like meeting up with you, continue to hope it will work one of these days! I think the 3 of us need to meet together - how fun that would be.
Off this evening on the London flight - connect to Paris in the morning and hope to be ensconced in our hotel near L'Opera by mid- afternoon - time for a quick walk about, and supper, if we can managed to keep our eyes open! Next day we meet up with our friends and board the first ship. I'll post a little more later today showing exactly where we'll be sailing etc.
Take care dear - enjoy these Autumn days - hopefully it's cooler there by now as it here, I almost don't want to leave town!
Hugs - Mary
Sarah, the Saluki has such an interesting history. I am not familiar with this breed of dog but she looks so sweet and gentle. I think she fell in love you too! I see sweet Sadie is enjoying the beautiful colors of fall and enjoying her time outside with you.
ReplyDeleteI sure wish you were packing rather than gardening now, I will miss you in Seattle!
Happy weekend dear friend...........
Hi Sarah,
ReplyDeleteI never heard of Salukis, but thank you for all the information and history on the breed. Your Sadie is such a cutie and must steal your heart every time you look at her!
Happy Fall!
I had never heard of this breed before. What a beautiful dog.
ReplyDeleteLooks like the Salukis would be at home in a castle. Sadie is too cute too!
ReplyDeleteSalukis are wonderful and loving dogs. Pharaoh dogs are too. I adopted a Pharaoh dog while I lived in Bahrain after a sweet dog had her pups under my carport. She had six pups and I was able to find three of them homes. The others we sadly had to euthanize because I could not find homes and could not just let them go. My neighbor and I took them to a local vet and held each one as it was put to sleep. It was one of the worst days of my life. Yet I knew that if I did not, they would be left to a life of misery. Not all cultures adore and respect dogs as we do. Sadie is very precious too ~ didn't want to leave her out.
ReplyDeleteBig Texas Hugs,
Susan and Bentley
They are both beautiful! Sadie looks like she's the perfect cuddling dog...
ReplyDeleteBoth are so lovable! ~ Great post and photos for S ~
ReplyDeleteHappy Weekend to you,
artmusedog and carol
I have never heard of this breed either. Both dogs are very sweet...
ReplyDeleteI had a co-worker that had a couple Saluki(s)...they are beautiful and so graceful. Your little Sadie is adorable, Sarah.
ReplyDeleteYou taught me something new, as usual. You have beautiful hair!
ReplyDeleteSarah,
ReplyDeleteWhat a sweet lovable dog. Love your turquoise sweater and jewelry. You look dressed perfectly for San Antonio. Years ago, my husband bought me a turquoise necklace in San Antonio in celebration of our 5th wedding anniversary.

Sarah,
ReplyDeleteWells is a beautiful creature (as is Sadie!). I smiled reading this post as I was so interested in getting a Saluki well over 10 years ago after we lost our Shadow. All of our dogs came from shelters and I had this idea in my head to get a purebred dog...put some thought into it. The Saluki was one that really interested me, not only because of their beauty but temperament as well. I was also reading up on the Ibizan Hound...similar in that they were popular with royalty in the Egyptian days. The latter won out as I was able to meet the breeder in Southern Illinois. The closet breeder of Saluki pups entailed a trip to Arizona.
The story ends with our giving Edmund to a farmer in Wisconsin. He was large and needed to run. He wasn't happy in our little house in the city. We really loved those 4 years though!
And on a final note---S is for Sarah!

Dearest Sara,
ReplyDeleteNo, I had not heard of this very elegant dog breed! You were quite enamored by Wells as is obvious from the lovely photos!
Sending you hugs and enjoy your Sadie girl.
Mariette
Hello Sarah, this is my first visit to your lovely blog and I am already learning something new! I have never heard of this breed of dog. Wells has quite an ancient pedigree and is very pretty with those long legs and dappled coat. Your own little Sadie is a charmer, too. I just love all dogs - they add so much love to our lives. Wishing you a S-weet weekend and thank you for stopping by! xo Karen

Hi Sarah. I am new here...you caught my eye with the Saluki. We have a greyhound, and they do look very similar. Thanks for the great informative post!
ReplyDeleteWells looks like a sweetheart Sarah and reminds me a whippet our friends have. Sadie is a cutie pie, love her posing with the pumpkins! ♥
ReplyDeleteLooks like Wells like you as much as you were taken by him!! But I have to say, Sadie is much cuter!!
ReplyDeleteYou can tell Saluki is a gentle friendly loving doggie and so very noble looking! Sadie of course is the same!
ReplyDeleteThe dogs look so different but both so beautiful, Sarah. BTW, the chairs and table on my front porch are adult size, not child,,,Christine
ReplyDeleteYou can't beat a story about dogs. I'd heard of Salukis but didn't really know that much about them, thanks for the info.

ReplyDeleteI love the coloring of both dogs..their beautiful!
ReplyDeleteThe Saluki is the official mascot of Southern Illinois University. Great post--Thanks.
ReplyDeleteSarah, Wells and Sadie both look like such sweet dogs. I love the way Wells is nuzzling your knee, and Sadie's face looks so sweet. Interesting history about the Saluki. I enjoyed reading about them.
ReplyDeleteIt is interesting to know a bit more about the Saluki, I've not heard of them before. Both dogs look to be such darlings.

What a sweet dog.. I ave always been a dog lover! Thank for joining Home Sweet Home!
ReplyDeleteI was going to mention about the Southern Illinois U. official mascot. I saw Hallie beat me to it.:-) This is a beautiful post, Sarah! Love the photos!
ReplyDeleteI thought that was a greyhound! I always learn something new when I come to visit you, Sarah! My sister has two rescued greyhounds (we have had a disgusting history with greyhound racing here in Australia) so I am fairly familiar with that breed. The saluki looks just as beautiful and regal!
ReplyDeleteThanks for joining #sundaysdownunder. I hope your week has been wonderful
Yikes, Sarah. Can you believe I am still working on these posts? I will get there one day.
ReplyDeleteI, too, was not familiar with this breed of dog. Quite interesting. Thanks for sharing. And, of course, Sadie must be your number one "S".♥ Happy extremely belated Pink Saturday.
