Labor Day
The NYC Central Labor Union began Labor Day
in 1882 to honor the worker. It became a national holiday in 1894.
Always celebrated on the first Monday of September,
Labor Day marks the official end of summer and signals
the start of a new school year for many children.
Labor Day Weekend is often a day of picnics and family reunions,
as it was for my family when I was a child.
The two little girls in the mosaic are my sister and I
in the 1950s at the yearly Labor Day Weekend reunion held on
the dairy farm that had belonged to our grandparents.

International Literacy Day
Begun in 1965 by UNESCO, this day is meant to
"highlight the importance of literacy
to individuals, communities, and societies."

9/11 Remembrance Day
The oak tree above, was just a seedling of six inches
when it was planted by the Walsh family in my neighborhood.
in 2001 as a tribute to honor and mourn those lost on the
horrific morning of September 11, 2001.
This special tree continues to grow and stand
tall some fifteen years later.
I often pass this tree several times a day,
and without exception it sparks the memory of
how Americans across our country came together in grief and
patriotism in the days and months following that tragic day.
September 13
Uncle Sam Day
Uncle Sam Day was officially declared by Congress in 1989.
The date was selected because
"Uncle Sam Wilson" was born on this date
You can read more about Uncle Sam Wilson and
my collection of Uncle Sam folk art here.
September 22
Autumn Equinox
This date signals the beginning of autumn when
daylight hours begin to diminish and cooler temperatures arrive.
A favorite time of year for me, I enjoy the russet colors,
dining alfresco, pumpkins, and the nip in the air.
September 26
Round Top Antiques Fair
It's fall and that means it's time to head to Round Top, Texas
for one of my favorite antique shopping venues.
Though I tend to shop the two venues above,
there are thousands of dealers who come from across the country
and set up in buildings and tents along the roadsides in this
area of Texas, all here to offer a marathon shopping experience.

Good morning Sarah, loved this post highlighting September and memories of years gone by. Stunning mosaics.
ReplyDeleteMM is experiencing a few teething problems this week, possibly because I'm in a strange location (the Midlands)and the internet is slooow! So glad you were able to join in this week.
The pumpkin van is great!
ReplyDeleteSo many events to look forward to in September. Happy September to you! xoxo Su
ReplyDeleteThat quilt was just beautiful! Lots to do in the month of September!
ReplyDeleteHappy Labor Day Sarah! I'm determined to make it to Round Top one day! I'm eagerly counting down the days, hours and minutes until fall :)
ReplyDeleteLove your summary posts each month, Sarah. Thank you for raising awareness to what may otherwise get lost in the shuffle of day-to-day existence. They remind us to live and enjoy and celebrate. The photo of your & your sister back in the day is so sweet, and your quilt with Uncle Sam so fine! Planting is such a great way to memorialize meaningful events, and that oak tree is wonderful. Ah, Round Top and Marburger.....someday, someday. :)
ReplyDeleteSarah, So glad to see this post as I was thinking this morning that I have come to depend on you to remind me of the upcoming important monthly dates. Sometimes I know of them and sometimes I find out new info, such as the Literacy Day. Such a wonderful thing to celebrate and encourage. As you may guess we have various tributes and memorials around here in honor of those lost on 9/11, and I feel so happy to see the tree your neighbors planted. We both love Uncle Sam, and now I will remember to add one of my collection to my fall displays so thank you for the reminder! I hope your September is cool and pleasant. Linda
ReplyDeleteSarah, I always enjoy reading your monthly summaries of what is ahead for the month! September has much to look forward to! Love your neighbor's tree in memory of 9/11! Happy Labor Day!
ReplyDeleteI too enjoy your Monthly posts..very very nice!
ReplyDeleteHi Sarah. Looks like it is going to be a busy September! Love the wall quilt! Happy Monday!
ReplyDeleteHi Sarah. Loved this informative post. We are spending Labor Day working in our yard while the temps are pleasant. Then we have a yard art celebration on Labor Day here and people display art on their front lawns. So we are going to get the map they provide and go look at some. Might be interesting... Happy Labor Day to you!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the "history" of celebrations in September. The wall quilt is stunning!
ReplyDeleteI always love reading your posts, Sarah. Besides looking at all of your gorgeous photos, I always manage to learn something new! :)
ReplyDeleteRound Top sounds like the most fun!
ReplyDeleteAnd, don't forget Talk Like a Pirate Day on September 19.
Lots of things to enjoy and remember in September. That bookish wall quilt is absolutely gorgeous! Have a wonderful month!
ReplyDeleteI know you will enjoy Round Top! We have plans to try to make it in the spring is we get lucky with the time share. Can't wait to see all the fun things you will find. Dianne
ReplyDeleteSarah,
ReplyDeleteSeptember appears to be a busy month for you, dear friend!
I would love to visit Round Top one time in the near future!
I love September. . .and Autumn Equinox!
Loved seeing the black & white photo of you and your Sister!
Fondly,
Pat
It's interesting to see that Canada and the US celebrate Labour Day the same weekend. A nice review of the other holidays too.
ReplyDeleteHappy Labor Day, Sarah! Enjoy the weather and its event, fall is coming. Have fun shopping!....Christine
ReplyDeleteYou had me at the wagon full of pumpkins. Thank you for sharing your wonderful September sentiments.
ReplyDeleteHi Sarah, Labor Day was always a fine time to picnic in our family. I loved seeing the tree and how much it has grown since 911. A wonderful tribute to the tragedy on that sad day. Fall is definitely my favorite time of the year. My grandfather had a dairy farm too. We lived on that farm when my grandfather retired. It was a wonderful life for a child but awfully hard work. We moved to FL when I was nine and our life changed. It was all good.
ReplyDeleteThis post is a great reminder and brought back memories. Thank you so much for joining Blue Monday.
Have a happy week.
Hugs,
Jeanne
The book wall quilt has me captivated ♥

ReplyDeleteI love the book quilt! (I own a small book store...)

Hi Sarah
ReplyDeleteEnjoyed this post with all of the September events. Love the tree planted in memory of those who died on September 11.
Catherine
Hi Sarah, I enjoyed seeing all of the events celebrated in Sept. I had no idea there was an Uncle Sam Day. I adore that quilt and Sam! The remembrance tree is a wonderful thing to honor those who gave their lives that awful day! Thanks for sharing with SYC.
ReplyDeletehugs,
Jann
Sarah, I saw this post the other day and it looks like I failed to comment.
ReplyDeleteI came back to tell you that I've always wanted a goat cart too. I saw a replica at Hobby Lobby yesterday for around $100. I'm really thinking about going back for it. Real ones cost a fortune!
Very informative! I love history and I loved looking at your photos! Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteI love the photo of the fun wagon full of pumpkins.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing this and your travels with Miss Merri Mac with SYC.
Sarah,
ReplyDeleteAs usual, your monthly list of what's happening that month has a couple of dates I would have overlooked. Thank you for researching and finding the great things that happen in September. I missed some of them while in Paris, but there is still plenty to look forward to later this month.
Are you going to Round Top this fall?
Judith
Sarah, you are so gracious to share these special events. The quilt is lovely and who doesn't love Uncle Sam? The Round top sounds like fun.
ReplyDeleteEveryone adores the wagon filled with pumpkins. Happy Wednesday.
Oh that book quilt is just gorgeous! I wish I could go to Round Top in the fall. It always seems to fall to close to my sons birthday or finals week. I'll live vicariously through you!
ReplyDeleteDearest Sarah,
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely post about Labor Day and the history behind these important days in our country!
Sending you hugs and blessings,
Mariette
Hi Sarah,
ReplyDeleteOne day I will make it to Round Top. And we can finally meet! Unless you come up to Maine first :)
I hope you are well, my friend. BTW, I met Cinnie and her husband in Castine this past summer. They are lovely.
Cheers,
L
September is a busy month. I've never heard of Uncle Sam Day. Another day to display my Uncle Same figures! Round Top is on my bucket list, but can't do it this year. Your photos for each event are perfection. Have a great weekend.
ReplyDeleteDear Sarah, you are right, September used to be a busy month for me, but since our nest is empty, it's soften up somewhat. Now we're in the middle of a rino of guest rooms and bathroom, so we are busy this year.
ReplyDeleteI love all your images: the wagon full of pumpkins is adorable and the book quilt is my fav. Thank you for sharing with us the history behind these dates, I always love to know about 'our country' and celebrate it, even at the distance.
Love and have a happy week dear.
FABBY
Round Top is amazing. I wish I could go this year.
ReplyDeleteHave a wonderful week.

Love the rusty cart with the pumpkins. Doesn't rust photograph well?

I thought September would be calm! I even dreamed of a cruise in Europe as they are so inexpensive in September - but it ran away from me with weddings and trips and visitors! Where does time fly?
ReplyDeleteI love your blog especially the pumpkins in the antique wagon. Thank you for sharing.
